Chapter Four

Wade woke to a deep, smooth voice singing an Adele song. He couldn’t remember the title of the song, but the words stuck in his memory enough for him to recognize it. The voice… oh, that voice washed over him, comforting him like a warm blanket.

He smiled as he listened. It was the first genuine smile he could remember having in a long time. Etgar was beautiful, gentle, and had an excellent singing voice. He was a triple threat to Wade’s heart.

Wade opened his eyes before assessing his body. Weakness still lived alive and well in his body, but most of the pain had lifted. There was a dull ache in its place. It was as if he had sat around for an entire day and his muscles were protesting the lack of movement. He was still skin and bones, but the feeling of life fading had disappeared.

So Lucas’s healing thing had worked.

Good. Wade could focus on the angel standing with his back turned, staring at something outside the window. Maybe the starry sky. Winter had set in good and proper, so the days were shorter. Wade didn’t know what time it was, but it must have been early evening or in the middle of the night. He could see fat snowflakes gather on the bottom of the windowpane as if they clung to the hope of getting inside, wishing to melt into water.

Etgar had changed his clothing at some point. He had on black pajama pants that advertised his love for coffee and also wore a tan sweater.

He sang in soft tones.

Wade wasn’t sure how long he lay there, but at some point Etgar let the song fade. He didn’t move from the window, even after he became silent. So Wade watched him until missing his voice sank into his soul.

“You should keep singing. You have an amazing voice.”

Etgar turned as if Wade startled him. He rushed over to the bed, sitting beside him and taking his hand. For a guy who needed a cane, he moved quickly. “How are you feeling?”

“Not as much pain. How long was I out?”

“Two days.”

Wade sucked in a breath. It hadn’t felt that long.

“Lucas said he healed you. Said he could read it in you. Other than building your strength back. You’ll have to do that on your own. But he said your reaction was odd. He said most people act as if it’s painful. So I wasn’t sure if it worked.” It was the most Etgar had said up to that point. His frantic tone spoke of his worry better than words could.

Wade smiled. “I didn’t want you to worry, so I tried to stay quiet.”

Etgar frowned. “You didn’t want me to know it hurt?”

“Didn’t want you to react violently. You would have regretted it, I think.” Wade pointed to the cup on the side table. “Can you hand me that?”

Etgar grabbed the cup for Wade. Wade covered his hand until they both held it while he drank from the straw. It was a testament to how much better he felt that he could move his limbs so easily.
